Public Interest Registry Dashboard – July to December 2012

Earlier this week, Public Interest Registry released it’s bi-annual domain name report, “The Dashboard,” highlighting the growth of .ORG in the second half of 2012. Overall, we had a remarkable year. Most notably, in June we accumulated the registration of the 10 millionth .ORG domain; and by December we reached 10.1 million .ORGs! Some of the key findings of “The Dashboard” include the following: New .ORG registrations increased by 11.9 percent in the second half of 2012. The number of .ORG domains under management (DUM) grew by 4.3 percent in 2012. ORG experienced a net gain of 416,301 registrations in 2012. .ORG DUM have more than doubled during the past seven years, increasing from 3.9 million in 2005 to more than 10.1 million in 2012. RESTON, Va. (February 27, 2013) – Public Interest Registry – the not-for-profit operator of the .ORG domain – today released the results of its bi-annual domain name report, “The Dashboard,” detailing the increased growth of .ORG from July to December. The report reveals that new .ORG registrations increased by 11.9 percent in the second half of 2012. Other findings outlined in “The Dashboard” include the following: The number of .ORG domains under registration (DUM) grew by 4.3 percent in 2012, growing 1.1 percent from July to December. .ORG experienced a net gain of 416,301 registrations in 2012. .ORG’s DUM has more than doubled during the past seven years, increasing from 3.9 million in 2005 to more than 10.1 million in 2012. “The Dashboard” also revealed strong growth outside of .ORG’s core markets, North America and Europe. Project94.org Kicks Off Next Month

Short .org domains go on auction block beginning next month. Next month .org registry Public Interest Registry will begin auctioning off domain names as part of Project 94. Project 94 is the marketing name for releasing 94 one and two character .org domain names that have been reserved since the top level domain was introduced in 1985. A handful of the 94 domain names have already been allocated to users (such as country code owners) and the remaining 85 will be auctioned off with the help of GoDaddy and eNom. The first set of domains will be auctioned at GoDaddy starting March 18. eNom will auction domains through NameJet beginning April 7 with the last auction closing April 19. eNom’s information page should go live next week is here. Public Interest Registry Opens Call for Expressions of Interest for .NGO and .ONG Domain Registrations

RESTON, Va. (February 19, 2013) — Public Interest Registry – the not-for-profit operator of the .ORG domain – today announced that it is accepting Expressions of Interest (EOI) from organizations that wish to obtain a domain ending in .NGO or .ONG. Interested parties who submit an EOI online will receive alerts and updates on the status and registration process of .NGO/.ONG domains when they become available in 2014. There is no fee to submit an EOI to Public Interest Registry as it is non-binding. PIR Survey Reveals That Most Americans Are Uninformed About DDoS Attacks

RESTON, Va. (November 28, 2012) – Whether motivated by an extreme form of free expression or criminal intent, distributed denial-of-service attacks (DDoS attacks) are increasingly commonplace worldwide. Yet there remains a universal misunderstanding amongst the general public of what to do in the event of a DDoS attack. According to a survey commissioned by Public Interest Registry (PIR) – the not-for-profit operator of the .ORG domain – to better assess Americans’ basic understanding of Internet and network attacks, 85 percent of Americans are uninformed or ill-equipped to deal with a DDoS attack. Moreover, only 17 percent could correctly identify what the acronym DDoS stood for with 77 percent admitting that they had no idea. Through this survey, it was ultimately revealed that across the board there is a lack of understanding about DDoS attacks despite their increasing frequency. .ORG Releases 94 Never-Before-Registered One- and Two-Character Domain Names

RESTON, Va. (October 10, 2012) – Much like real estate, Internet “curb appeal” – otherwise known as an Internet address – can help optimize a company or organization’s online branding or outreach efforts. Today, Public Interest Registry (PIR) – the not-for-profit operator of the .ORG domain, one of the original generic top-level domains with over 10 million registrations – will release 94 previously unregistered one- to two-character .ORG addresses – the shortest and perhaps most memorable domain names available. Through a partnership with Go Daddy and eNom, the addresses will be made available through an allocation process to companies and organizations who respect the inherent trust and value of the .ORG brand. Referred to as “Project94,” the list of available names includes the likes of A.ORG, O.ORG, 7.ORG, and PJ.ORG.
