2013: A Year of InsPIRation

Can you believe that December is here already? What a year 2013 has been, an exciting one at that! From global conferences and meeting with NGOs, to revealing Public Interest Registry’s new branding and the revamped face of pir.org to the world, our team has been hard at work, and anything but quiet! We were very pleased to wrap up last week with the 10th anniversary of the Manthan Awards, an initiative that recognizes the best use of Information Communication Technology (ICT) and digital tools for social good and community development in South Asia. This was the third year in a row that Public Interest Registry sponsored the event, and it was such a fantastic experience to meet and speak with grassroots NGOs whose technological efforts are truly improving community development despite their access to minimal resources. As we start to head into the holiday season, our team is getting

Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela

Yesterday, the world lost one of its brightest guiding lights – a true revolutionary whose vision for reconciliation and unity galvanized a country and inspired the world. Some knew him as Rolihlahla “the troublemaker”, others respected him as “Madiba”; the world will forever remember the legacy of Nelson Mandela. LAC, DNS and the Importance of Comunidad

LAC, DNS and the Importance of Comunidad

The 1st Latin American & Caribbean DNS Forum was held on 15 November 2013, before the start of the ICANN Buenos Aires meeting. Coordinated by many of the region’s leading technological development and capacity building organizations, the day long event explored the opportunities and challenges for Latin America brought on by changes in the Internet landscape, including the introduction of new gTLDs such as .LAT, .NGO and others. The Forum addressed DNS from an industry perspective; the “divides,” both in terms of digital access, as well as participation in global IG forums; and security issues for the region’s DNS players. Critical distinctions were proposed in terms of the blurring of DNS issues with other Internet aspects, which reflects the complex ecosystem of players, technologies and social engineering.
