Project94.org Kicks Off Next Month

Short .org domains go on auction block beginning next month. Next month .org registry Public Interest Registry will begin auctioning off domain names as part of Project 94. Project 94 is the marketing name for releasing 94 one and two character .org domain names that have been reserved since the top level domain was introduced in 1985. A handful of the 94 domain names have already been allocated to users (such as country code owners) and the remaining 85 will be auctioned off with the help of GoDaddy and eNom. The first set of domains will be auctioned at GoDaddy starting March 18. eNom will auction domains through NameJet beginning April 7 with the last auction closing April 19. eNom’s information page should go live next week is here. PIR Survey Reveals That Most Americans Are Uninformed About DDoS Attacks

RESTON, Va. (November 28, 2012) – Whether motivated by an extreme form of free expression or criminal intent, distributed denial-of-service attacks (DDoS attacks) are increasingly commonplace worldwide. Yet there remains a universal misunderstanding amongst the general public of what to do in the event of a DDoS attack.  According to a survey commissioned by Public Interest Registry (PIR) – the not-for-profit operator of the .ORG domain – to better assess Americans’ basic understanding of Internet and network attacks, 85 percent of Americans are uninformed or ill-equipped to deal with a DDoS attack. Public Interest Registry Releases Results of Bi-Annual Domain Name Report

(August 14, 2012) — Public Interest Registry (PIR)—the not-for-profit operator of the .ORG domain—today released the results of its bi-annual domain name report, “The Dashboard,” detailing the strong growth of .ORG during the first six months of 2012. Specifically, PIR grew .ORG registrations by 7.7 percent in the first half of 2012 compared to the same time period a year ago.   Other highlights from the report include that:   Domains under management (DUM) increased from 3.9 million in 2006 to 9.9 million by the end of June 2012 – a net gain of 305,948 for the first half of the year and an increase of 154 percent over seven years. The blended renewal rate, the average renewal rate from the first to the third year, of existing .ORG websites for the first half of 2012 was 75.4 percent. PIR Elects New Members To .ORG Advisory Council

RESTON, Va. (August 6, 2012) — Public Interest Registry (PIR), the not-for-profit operator of the .ORG domain, today announced the appointment of new members to its .ORG Advisory Council. Since its creation in 2003, the .ORG Advisory Council has been a valuable resource for the PIR leadership team by providing advice on policy, outreach and new services to improve registry operations and to support the global, noncommercial .ORG community. The Council consists of 15 members with at least two from each of the following six regions: Asia/Middle East, Asia Pacific, Africa, Europe, North America and Latin America. During their term, council members will advise on a number of core issues central to .ORG including global outreach, Internet security and key policy initiatives unique to running a top-level registry.
