Continuing to Work in the Public Interest

Continuing to Work in the Public Interest

Written by Don Blumental, Senior Policy Advisor The new gTLD program is one of the most significant developments in the history of the domain name system and Public Interest Registry is doing its part. We’ve already launched Cyrillic, Hindi and Chinese versions of .org and are working hard to bring .ngo and .ong to serve Non-Governmental Organizations later this fall. However, not all of our time and effort is focused on new domains. I was in Internet law enforcement for many years with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, and am very fortunate to have been able to continue working on security, privacy, DNS abuse, and law enforcement related matters since joining Public Interest Registry. A significant part of my ongoing responsibilities is to be aware of issues that might affect the security and stability of the Internet, and to foster a continued sense of trust and safety in its use.

Takeaways from InterAction Forum 2014

On driving change, how do we make a difference? This was a common question and overarching theme of this year’s forum in Washington, DC. The answer? At a very basic level, collaboration, collaboration, and more collaboration – between NGOs, local partners, governments, and businesses – is critical! More specifically: There needs to be a balance between causes and consequences in order to achieve capacity building. Youth should be involved with problem planning and implementation. Redefine the purpose of business so that business becomes the driver for social and environmental change – we need global collective action! For NGOs, strategic partnerships play a critical role in community capacity development; therefore, it’s important to be aware of the opportunities and challenges that may be associated with them. For example: The dynamic between NGOs and universities has changed; there is greater emphasis and monitoring of impact evaluations, which means that measurement is more

Three New Top-Level Domains Now Available for Registration RESTON, Va., May 27, 2014Public Interest Registry – the not-for-profit operator of the .org domain – today announced the general availability of three new Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) which translate to “organisation” or “institution” in non-Latin-based scripts – one in Devanagari, one in Cyrillic, and one in simplified Chinese. Previously only available to qualified domain trademark holders, all interested companies, organisations and individuals can now register for the new domains. With these new IDNs serving as useful branding tools, the domains will enable website owners to brand their addresses in native scripts, ultimately making the Internet more user-friendly and encouraging heightened communication. “Our mission at Public Interest Registry has always been to help organisations maximize their audience reach and better communicate their missions, activities and accomplishments. The launch of these new international domain names speaks to the heart of that mission,” said

Technology Leaders + For Purpose Orgs = #FPtech Love

Over the past two weeks, our team traveled across Australia to meet with the local NGO and fptech community – yes, that’s a thing! – to talk about innovation and the changes coming to the Internet, implementing key digital marketing strategies, and capacity building to create a positive impact and become a powerful force within the sector. First, we attended Connecting Up in Gold Coast. This is an annual conference that focuses on change, new opportunities, and helping fp organizations to find solutions and improve any and all aspects of their organisations’ operations. Insightful? Indeed. The event kicked off with none other than our friend over at NTEN, Amy Sample Ward, who gave an amazing keynote that simplified the idea of innovation and totally left us all with several Aha! moments. For future reference, innovation doesn’t always have to be BIG; it can start out as something very small that
