Total .ORG Domains Reaches 8.5 Million

The results are in! According to .ORG’s second bi-annual "The Dashboard" report, the .ORG domain has experienced unparalleled growth during the first half of 2010 in comparison to 2009’s half-year report. Case in point, in the first six months of 2010, the .ORG domain grew by 7.6 percent—more than doubling last year’s first half gain of 3.2 percent. Not to mention that this increase in registrations has brought .ORG’s total domains under management to an astounding 8.5 million. That’s 500,000 more .ORG communities than 6 months ago!

Here and Now, The Maturity of DNSSEC

Today, we are in full production with DNSSEC, accepting second level signings from registrars.  This means that all registrars can offer added security protection to their customers by enabling .ORG web site owners to sign his or her domain name with DNSSEC.

Phishers Beware!

The days of viral phishing are over. Since its inception, phishing, has always been a criminal magnet.  It has a low start-up cost and few barriers to entry.  At .ORG, Public Interest Registry, we work hard to combat phishing attacks.  So much so, phishers have largely stopped registering domains on both .ORG and .INFO.  In 2009, phishing reached an all time peak with a shocking number of attacks.   In a new report by Boston-based APWG , called the Global Phishing Report, authors Greg Aaron and Rod Rasmussen delve into the attacks of 2009 and highlight the dangers of “phishing gangs.”

Say… When Are YOU Planning for DNSSEC Deployment?

Late last week, PIR publicly announced full DNSSEC deployment for .ORG.  Namely, we will begin accepting second level signed .ORG zones beginning in June of this year.  The 90-day notification was just sent out by our Technical Support Team to alert Registrars to the lead-time.  Our announcement garnered press attention because it was yet another sign that DNSSEC is inevitable.  “WHEN?” you ask.  The time to plan for DNSSEC is now.  It’s difficult to ignore that DNSSEC is nearing widespread adoption.

2009: What Did We Really Learn?

The beginning of every year is a time for introspection, an appraisal of the year that was, and planning for the year to come.  It is also a time to follow tradition and to recap the biggest news of the year.  But by now, I am guessing that we have all read our fair share about the people and events who have impacted the last 12 months.  But as we examine the “whats” of 2009 (i.e. what happened, who was involved, and what resulted) , we should set our focuses forward  by learning from yesterday and planning for tomorrow.

Of Courage, Loss and Gratitude

On Dec 1st, .ORG, The Public Interest Registry experienced a significant loss.  Our loss was not one of market share or service; it was one far more significant.  We lost Christine Lee -- a precious and compassionate, friend, mother, wife and co-worker -- to breast cancer.  I met Christine when I first started in July of 2007.  She was the executive assistant and office manager for PIR.  Chris greeted me on my first day with a warm smile, and proceeded to take me under her wing to ensure I met everyone and that I was settled in my new office with everything I needed

Registry/Registrar Vertical Integration: The Registrant Pays the Check

In a joint document, Afilias, NeuStar, and PIR discuss the salient issues facing the ICANN Board regarding a proposal for registry/registrar vertical integration in the newTLD round.   The paper identifies some of the risks associated with the ICANN Staff proposal while at the same time proposing a path forward that does not jeopardize any further delay in the new gTLD launch process.

Advocating for Domain Name Registry-Registrar Separation

.ORG, The Public Interest Registry has, since its inception, advocated for policies designed to reflect the public interest, namely of fair and open competition that benefits not only .ORG, but all Internet users. ICANN is now faced with a critically important decision on whether to remove the trusted and proven safeguards that prevent registrars from owning and operating registries.
