.ORG, The Public Interest Registry Releases Its First Ever Domain Name Report, “The Dashboard”

“The Dashboard” Shows .ORG Registrations Grew 11% in the First Half of 2009

RESTON, VA–(Marketwire – October 06, 2009) – .ORG, The Public Interest Registry (www.pir.org) announces today the release of their first bi-annual domain name report, “The Dashboard.” Among other industry data, “The Dashboard” reveals that registrations for .ORG grew 11%, up to 7.69 million total registrations in the first half of 2009, compared to a year ago. This is significant since the growth rate outpaces other well known Top Level Domains (TLDs) such as .com and .net in a year otherwise marked by economic downturn. Similarly, from January to June, .ORG experienced the highest percentage growth at 5% compared to other TLDs.

“The Dashboard” also contains for the first time information on the type, density and diversity of content provided by organizations who have registered a .ORG address. The content available is related not only to non-profit organizations, but also to healthcare, arts and culture, associations, sports and teams, schools, environmental, open source software, charity and religion to name a few.

Beyond key industry data, “The Dashboard” describes the many key initiatives and innovations lead by PIR, the company behind .ORG, in the first half of 2009. Some notable initiatives include becoming the first and largest open TLD to successfully sign with Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC), PIR’s leadership in the industry to adopt and advocate policies against abuses such as phishing, malware and spam, as well as programs to shine the spotlight on the millions of growing causes worldwide.

“‘The Dashboard’ report highlights the diversity of content available under a .ORG address, which goes a long way to explain the phenomenal growth and appeal of the .ORG domain name, even compared to many traditional choices available in the marketplace,” said Alexa Raad, CEO of .ORG, The Public Interest Registry.
