Spotlight on Spain: The .ORGs To Watch

Last week, many of us at Public Interest Registry attended ICANN63, an annual meeting hosted by ICANN (The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), which convenes members of the global online community from far and wide to discuss issues that are essential to the future of the internet. While at ICANN, Public Interest Registry participated in dialogue around how best to ensure the internet stays a safe, secure, and effective tool for individuals and organizations across the globe.

This year, ICANN was hosted in beautiful Barcelona and so we wanted to take this opportunity to highlight some of the incredible .orgs from this region who are making a difference in the world. Spain is a country with a number of organizations dedicated to missions for good, many leveraging the .org domain to spread their message beyond their borders.

Amigos de la Tierra is an ecological organization with a mission to promote local and global change for a more environmentally-friendly society. Amigos de la Tierra makes an impact both locally and globally and serves as the regional affiliate of Friends of Earth International, a global organization promoting solutions that will help to create environmentally sustainable and socially just societies world-wide. The organization as a whole channels its Spanish and European funding toward sustainable development projects.

Fundación del Valle (fundaciondelvalle.org)

Specifically, the organization is aimed at the implementation of development cooperation programs, the educational training of youth and children, and the sociocultural promotion of women. Acción Contral El Hambre/Action Against Hunger (accioncontraelhambre.org)

Acción Contral El Hambre is working toward a world without hunger through the detection, treatment and prevention of malnutrition in 50 countries world-wide. To act on this mission, the organization works to strengthen its connection with target groups that can provide resources, create alliances with new academic and social partners, and to create new solutions to combat multiple forms of hunger. Informed by 35 years of operational experience, the organization develops revolutionary nutrition products and field testing treatment protocols for better sanitation and hygiene and to enhance food security for those underserved.

Fundación Promoción Social/Social Promotion Foundation (promocionsocial.org)

The Fundación Promoción Social is a private, non-profit institution that promotes human development, through humanitarian aid, cultural and educational cooperation, and social action. The organization’s mission is to reinforce the capabilities of each person, through the reduction of poverty and inequality through economic, social and sustainable development. The Fundación Promoción Social supports minorities to guarantee access for all to basic goods and services, and to foster cultural dialogue.

Fundación Humanismo y Democracia/Humanism and Democracy Foundation (hmasd.org)

The Fundación Humanismo y Democracia is a private non-profit organization that acts as a cultural foundation in the service of human rights and democratic values. The organization continues to contribute to the transition to democracy in Spain, and in the international arena, the organization has been central to the execution of more than 300 development interventions in 20 countries, on four continents, aimed at institutional strengthening, the fight against poverty, and improvement of the quality of life of people in vulnerable situations.

We’re excited by the great work of these organizations in Spain and the many other .orgs in the region. It’s their dedication and commitment to their mission that inspires us to continue our work and ensure .org is a domain they can always trust.
