Spotlight Session: Build Change

Feature: Juan Caballero, Chief Executive Officer of Build Change

For millions of families around the world, home is not always the refuge it should be, especially as climate change brings stronger storms, rising waters, and more natural frequent disasters. Build Change exists to change that reality.

In this Spotlight Session, Juan Caballero, Chief Executive Officer of Build Change, shares how the organization is helping communities turn vulnerability into resilience. Founded in 2004 by earthquake engineer Dr. Elizabeth Hausler, Build Change emerged from a critical realization. Post-disaster rebuilding efforts were often repeating the same construction weaknesses that caused homes to fail in the first place.

Two decades later, Build Change has helped strengthen more than 280,000 buildings and improve safety for over 1.43 million people worldwide. What sets the organization apart is its people-centered approach. Rather than arriving with fixed solutions, Build Change begins by listening, working alongside homeowners, builders, and local leaders to design safer, future-ready homes that reflect local needs and priorities.
