ICANN’s response to our concerns and next steps?

For all of you following the issue we raised originally to ICANN leadership: As a quick recap, we are concerned that IDNs and their process of implementation should be directed in a way to allow for multi-lingual navigation of the Internet and not used as a tool to control access, impose censorship or limit freedom of expression online.

.ORG Applauds US Government on DNSSEC

.ORG applauds the US Government’s decision last week to require all users of the .GOV domain to implement DNSSEC, and even more importantly, to sign the .GOV root.

In the wake of our recent news that .ORG has officially registered 7 million domains, some comments made to CNN by Craigslist founder Craig Newmark this week really resonated with me. The article, entitled “Internet Can Strengthen Democracy” discusses many of the same issues we have found to be the driving forces behind .ORG’s consistent year-over-year growth – community building, interaction, and inclusivity.

On July 29, the NCUC and PIR sent out a joint letter to ICANN asking it to consider the interests of the end-users as core to its policies in IDN implementation. The letter was received on August 6. The text of the letter is on ICANN's website.

On the Pressing Need for a Signed Root

Attacks on the security of the Internet have been much in the news lately, and there is an increased urgency to take the technical steps to combat these attacks. .ORG has been doing its part to lead this process by taking introductory steps to implement DNSSEC (Domain Name System Security Extensions). Using DNSSEC, domain name holders can protect the integrity of data in the Domain Name System by digitally signing their domains. In order to make DNSSEC effective, there is one additional step that is needed - "signing the root".

.ORGs are becoming more and more valuable

DNSSEC Best for the Internet in the Long Run

I recall a year ago when, as a new CEO, I attended some industry events and first brought up the topic of DNSSEC in the .ORG zone. At that time, DNSSEC wasn’t as understood as now (notice I did not say it is now well understood), and there were major opponents to DNSSEC in very influential arenas who charged that the DNS did not need anything like DNSSEC and that the time for the type of technology like DNSSEC had come and gone.
