Getting nonprofits online with Grassroots.org

We present another ‘Guest Blogger’ in our series from experts in a variety of different fields to share their insights on who .ORGs are and how .ORGs are using the domain to advance their missions and passions. This week, we’re talking to Grassroots.org, which is a 501c3 nonprofit organization that provides free web and business development services to charitable organizations in the US and Canada. We are excited for them to share their insights into online identity and building a credible presence on the Internet.

As of June 2009, Grassroots.org is serving over 1,500 organizations and has given away $1.8M worth of services since 2003. Among our free tools is Free One Year Domain Name Registration.

Domain Name registration is one of the most important steps to building a quality web presence. As your online identity to people you already know and people who are looking for you on the web, it is extremely important that you are branding yourself correctly.

This is where the team at PIR comes in. Without the people who support and maintain the .ORG identity as a whole, .ORG could be indistinguishable amongst the other TLDs (i.e. .com, .net, etc.). At Grassroots.org we get nonprofits online everyday and pride ourselves in always putting forward business best practices. We suggest that nonprofits start branding themselves with a .ORG domain name for the following reasons:

  • Gain credibility in the nonprofit sector
  • Align your online address with the mission of your organization
  • Appear higher on Google searches (just because you’re a .ORG!)
  • Register a domain name that supports you and your interests
  • Join a community that advocates for positive change-world-wide!

We like to think of .ORG as our Family Name; One that identifies us as part of a family bringing help and pushing forward on the frontier of education, health and progressive change. The Internet is more often the first place someone looks for help, services and information. As a nonprofit organization, it is part of your mission to meet people halfway and provide them with a quality encounter online.
